How do you know if someone is a friend or an acquaintance?

To me an acquaintance is like someone you just say hi to when you see them or make small talk.

I have a lot of acquaintances in school, but i don't bother with them outside of school. There are very few people who are really friends.

A friend is someone I spend time with socially out of choice and can have a real talk with. An acquaintence I just say "hi" to and know through a friend usually

I call them 'school friends' and 'outside of school friends'.
School friends are people who I talk to during school but wouldn't really hang out with out of school.
Out of school friends are people I hang out with out of school and would like call to do something. I have like... 2 or 3 of those friends.
